Ferndale Infants School, Swindon, Wiltshire
Mandy attended this school about 1966-1969.
She remembers her first day because she cried throughout; what a trauma for everyone involved! After settling in she remembers the excitement of being Milk Monitor and being in the chosen class allowed to use the play equipment at playtime; all the other classes had to play in the ordinary playground. Another curious thing Mandy remembers was going into the hall and everyone lying down on a mat and going to sleep for a short while. That was very strange.
During most playtimes Mandy used to marry Martin Cousens, or rather try to, but they were always interrupted by someone needing Martin - he was a bit of a hero and was always needed to sort things out. Mandy wonders if he can remember this too despite it being around fifty years after the event.
When it was someone's birthday they were allowed to choose a hymn to sing in assembly and Mandy always chose the same one - There Is A Green Hill Far Away. It was lucky her birthday fell around Easter. Other things that come to mind are having to go to the head's office to choose library books, and listening to a great big radio box and having to pretend to be a seed that grew into a big tree whilst dancing round and round. Very strange! Mandy cannot remember any of the teacher's names, but knows she enjoyed being at this school - except that first day.
