The Church of St. Mary, Lydiard Tregoze, Swindon, Wiltshire
This is the grave of Francis and Bridget King, and is located in the east side of the churchyard at St. Mary's church, close to the chancel wall. The tomb is Grade II listed, as part of a group of nine chest tombs in this area. For details of the listing, see the Historic England website.
The inscription on the top is now extremely hard to read - we are able to make out some words but the detail such as dates is lost. We are lucky that when we visited in January 2004 the low winter sun caused a shadow on the inscription making it easier to read - and even shows some of the carved decoration at the top. In itself it is a poor quality photograph, but we are glad we didn't delete it because of the quality. The inscription has eroded so much in a relatively short time but fortunately we have a record of it. The lines across the stone are shadows of the grass growing next to it.
