Gravestones at Christ Church, Swindon, Wiltshire

This is the grave of Mandy's great grandparents Adelaide Daisy (nee Stratford) and her second husband Ernest William Glass.  Adelaide - known as Daisy - was widowed during the first world war when her husband Albert Edward Glass died of wounds at hospital in Mesopotamia - now called Iraq.  Daisy was left to look after their 5 year old daughter Queenie May Glass, Mandy's grandmother.  Before he left for war, Albert had asked his brother to look after his wife and child if he did not return - a promise Ernest kept.  Albert died in February 1917 and Ernest married Daisy two years later in 1919 when the war had finished.  Daisy and Ernest had 49 years together and had three children together.  Although there is no stone to show where they were buried, the office at Christ Church were able to tell us which plot so we were able to find it; the flowers in the first photograph were laid on their grave by their granddaughter Valerie.  A grave marker was placed to show where they lay.

Firstly Daisy and Albert and Queenie lived at 1 Church Road, then after their marriage Ernest joined them.  They brought up their children in the house - a further two daughters, Joan and Ivy, and one son, Ernest.  It is located just opposite Christ Church where the couple were buried.  Two of Daisy's sisters also lived in the same road (Nos. 3 and 5), and it must have been good to have family so close - apparently there were always lots of children playing in the houses.

During 2018 there were various events to commemorate the end of the first world war 100 years before and Christ Church lit up their spire each night to remember the men of their parish and those who did not return; Albert was one of them.  At the end of the week on 10th November the spire was lit in red and the bells rang out to commemorate all those that died in the wars.  The last photograph below was taken on that evening from outside their home.

The family do not have a photograph of Albert - we would be delighted to find one, so if you know of one, please let us know.  Thank you.
