Danvers Family
Tomb of Sir John and Lady Anne
Tomb of Lady Anne Danvers

Henry Danvers was created the first Earl of Danby by Charles I.   This tomb lies in the North Chapel.   Due to the Chapel being not much wider than the tomb, it is difficult to photograph it without being at such an angle the photographs are distorted.   We will endevour to take some better photographs on our next visit.

There is an inscription running around the rim of the tomb, but some is obscured; we have copied the visible wording here:

+ HENRY EARLE OF DANBY, 2d SONNE TO Sr JOHN DANVERS+BORNE AT DAUNTSEY IN THE COUNTY OF WILTs THE 28th + DAY OF JUNE ANo DNI 1573 AND BAPTIZED IN THIS CHURCH THE FIRST OF JULY FOLLOWING BEING SUNDAY, HEE DEPARTED THIS + LIFE ON Ye 28th OF JAN. Ao DNI 1643 & LYETH HERE INTERRED.

In the 1660s John Aubrey wrote:

"On the North side of the chancel is a handsome Burying place, rayled with iron, which was built by the Earl of Danby:   wherein lye buried 1, His father, old Sir John Danvers.   2, The Earl of Danby: who was, my Cousin Villiers told me, page to Sir Philip Sydney:   and 3, Lady Gargrave, the Earl's sister."
