During July 2006 Swindon joined in the celebrations to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of Isambard Kingdom Brunel.  Because of his work as an engineer, the rail works came to Swindon, changing it forever.

Publicity for this event included:  "This project gives Swindon people and visitors the chance to celebrate the rich heritage of our town, including Brunel’s beautiful Railway Village.  In Swindon, we want to shout about the wonderful achievements of Brunel that are reflected in our town today - as a centre for commercial growth and innovation." and "We are especially excited about Brunel 200 because of its link to the whole South West region.  The project is also a terrific opportunity for us to forge stronger links with local community groups.  Swindon residents, community groups and visitors alike will be encouraged to enjoy a range of creative and fun events to celebrate our important railway heritage."

Mandy became involved in a couple of events because she is in a community choir - the Swindon Scratch Choir.  They were invited to take part and were pleased to contribute to the celebrations by singing in the foyer at the Wyvern Theatre and later in Wharf Green.  It was while while she was at an event that she noticed a small area near the Brunel car parks had been landscaped so these photographs were taken.  We do not know whom was responsible for their construction or how long the garden remained there (but it is long gone now).  Well done to whomever it was though - the statue captures Brunel's stance just as we remember him, and the steam engines are very fitting.
