Stratton St. Margaret lies north of Swindon.   Where both communities have expanded over recent years the two seem almost joined.   The name is a corruption of Street-town, from the Roman road (Ermin Street) around which it was built.

Mandy's family of Leas and Kembles can be found as far back as the SSM records go, so it was a bit disappointing to read the John Aubrey book (as written by Mr R. Browne) account of St. Margaret's of Stratton:   "Here is nothing very remarkable either ancient or moderne, only in the N. wall of the Church is an old niche, but without any monument."   We have visited many church buildings over the years, and some you know are neglected, dusty and in decay, and some are well used and cared for.   St. Margaret's comes into the latter category.   It feels like a true community church; a busy church, it has a vitality and a welcoming atmosphere.

We have taken many photographs of the gravestones but there is still hundreds left.   We have concentrated mainly on the original part of the graveyard where the oldest gravestones are; a lot of these are extremely difficult to read but as long as we can just about make out a name we have included it in these pages.   You may need to download the full size photograph and zoom in to see the detail better.   Some names have, admitedly, been guessed at so if you spot an error please tell us so we can amend it.   Thank you.
