Little Somerford is 8 miles north-east of Chippenham and 3 miles south east of Malmesbury,
with a population of 360. The village has gone under the name of Somerford Parva,
Molines and Maudit (John Maudit owned much of the land in the 14th century), in its past.
The parish church is called St. John the Baptist. There are lots of
wonderful church buildings in this part of Wiltshire, and St. John the Baptist
is no exception. It is unpretentious about its contents, but has a wealth
of history to be seen. Most noticeable are the wall paintings,
the carved wood and stained glass windows - much more grand than our photographs show.
The rood screen (made of two or three parts) is thought to have come from
Malmesbury Abbey, dated about 1350.
The crest on the right at the top of this page shows a sketch of a scutcheon as
illustrated in John Aubrey's book. You can see from the photograph below
(porch section, row 1) it is still recognisable despite 340 years of British weather!
