Avebury Wiltshire Collections Entry

Silbury Hill is another of those curious places where there are lots of questions but no real answers.   There are rumours of a king buried astride his horse, and skeletons being found, but nobody actually knows despite there being numerous digs to try to find out.   Use the Avebury Wiltshire Collections link above to see a sketch of the stones and its relationship to Avebury (Plate I)

Silbury Hill is a place all local school children would have been taken to on a school trip at some point.   Mandy's trip there in the late 1960s or early 1970s is remembered by her because the class had a race to the top.   Some children chose the safer option of taking a tiny path (probably sheep-worn) which circuled its way to the top, but some chose to run vertically up.   Mandy chose this latter option and remembers what a scramble it was - so steep she kept sliding down.   Duncan's father recalled his trip there as a child when he rode his bike up!   His legs must have really ached after that.   The view from the top is worth all the effort though, as no doubt all those school children would have discovered.

Alas the hill is now fenced off to stop people from climbing up due to erosion and possible collapse.

Please note that the above Map link will take you to Avebury not Silbury Hill - you will need to move down the map to see the Hill.   By clicking the 'aerial' button you will be able to see a birds-eye photograph of the Hill.
