This information is from the book   Wiltshire Collections   by John Aubrey and John Jackson, published by the Wiltshire Archaeological and Natural History Society* in 1862.

This text written by John Jackson, in the 1860s.

"Another object of antiquity which Aubrey might have noticed, is a very curious piece of mediaeval embroidery, originally a cope, now used as a pulpit cloth.   On a brown satin ground are stitched various embellishments worked in gold and silver thread.   In the centre is a representation of our Saviour on the Cross, with an angel on each side receiving the blood in a chalice.   The rest is covered with figures of Saints, cherubim full of eyes, fleurs de lys, &c. [See Archaeol. Journal, I. 330.]"

(A cope is a long cloaklike vestment worn by a priest or bishop in ceremonies and processions.)
