The Church of St. John the Baptist at Hannington is surrounded by beautiful countryside. In fact we had to go four times
before we could gain access to the grounds, due to the surrounding farmland being closed because of a foot-and-mouth outbreak.
The church itself looks to be in good condition, and has some lovely stone carvings of faces around it.
The day we visited in July 2001 was a hot (for England!) day. The only sounds to be heard were the cows in a field next to the
churchyard, all kinds of birds and insects, and the occasional tractor passing. As if to emphasize how deep we were into the
countryside rabbits darted across in front of us as we took photographs, and later when we returned to our car we noticed a deer in a
neighbouring field. We sat and watched to see what it would do. He came closer and gracefully hopped over the shoulder
height fence as though it were just a few inches tall. This handsome creature came within two metres of the car and hopped over
the next fence and disappeared into some trees. What a wonderful site he was.
In May 2005 we returned to re-take photographs of the gravestones; the original being poor quality ones taken using a video camera and
capturing the picture. Although most of our new photographs are much better, a few were unusable so the original has been left
on the page. We have now photographed all the gravestones with readable inscriptions. Some of these inscriptions are very
difficult to read and names have been guessed - if you notice a mistake please let us know so we can correct it. Thank You.
