Chiseldon Village
Primitive Methodist Church
John Aubrey's visit

Chiseldon is a small village a few miles south of Swindon, with a mixture of old and modern houses.   The village name has had various spellings - Chisledon, Chiselden, and Ceosel-den.   Ceosel is Anglo-Saxon for gravel or sand, and dene, vale or plain.

Holy Cross is usually kept locked due to previous vandalism (someone actually started a fire inside the church).   We were lucky to time our visit when a church member was there, and we were invited to go inside.   Our thanks go to this person for taking the time to talk to us about the building and its history, and to allow us to take these photographs.   However, this person needed to leave before we had finished so sadly we were not able to take photographs of all the wonderful objects there are to see inside this church.   The walls had so many memorials - it was a wonderful sight for someone interested in genealogy! but sad because we had to leave before photographing them all.

We were told the church is now used a lot during the week, by many groups, even hosting plays put on by a local group.   It must be a struggle to find enough finance to maintain such an old building.   A leaflet inside the church gives a brief guide to the church, as written by the Friends of Holy Cross.   If you would be interested in giving a donation to the Friends' work, please contact us and we will find out details for you.
