Effigy of Sir Roger Tocotes

 | Top  |  Bromham Menu  |  Foot  |

The figure is completely covered with graffiti - a very sorry sight.   However, this graffiti is in itself fascinating - some dating back to the 1600s along with (presumably) the names of the perpetrators.

Lord of the manor of bromham
Sir Edward Bayntun was the second son of Sir Edward Bayntun, 1480-1544.   He inherited the manor on the death of his brother, Sir Andrew Bayntun in 1564.   He married Agnes Ryce and they had thirteen children, of whom three were living at the time of his death - Henry, Anne and Elizabeth.   Agnes died in 1574 and Sir Edward secondly married Anne Packington who died in 1578.   Sir Edward died in 1593 and his heir was his son Henry 1572-1616.
King Henry VIII and Queen Anne visited Bromham in 1535, they stayed at Bromham House* from August 27th until September 3rd of that year.   The next family they visited on their "progression" was that of Sir John Seymour of Wolfhall near Burbage; their daughter, Jane, was to become the next queen!
The rhyming couplet on the tomb reads:-

"Here lieth SIR EDWARD BAYNTUN, Knight, within this marble clad,

Then married to Anne Packington, his second wyfe she was,
For whose remembrance here in tombe these lynes he left in brasse.
Anno Dni 1578."

The brass effigy of one daughter is now lost.
*Bromham House was destroyed during the English Civil War on 5th May 1645.
The full length brass of Sir Edward’s grandfather, Sir John Bayntun who died in 1516, is on the floor near this tomb.     [This text is copied from information on the tomb]

Tomb of Lady Elizabeth Tocotes   1409-1491

 | Top  |  Bromham Menu  |  Foot  |

Lady Elizabeth married firstly, Sir William Beauchamp, Lord of Bromham manor in 1449.   Sir William inherited the title of Lord St. Amand through his wife lady Elizabeth’s great grandfather, Almeric.   Lord St. Amand had died in 1402 and the title had been in abeyance since that date, there being no male to inherit.   Sir William and Lady Elizabeth had one son Richard.   Sir William died on the 19th march 1457 and was buried at Market Lavington where he also held lands and a house.   The title of St. Amand then passed to their son Richard Beauchamp.
In 1458 Lady Elizabeth had licence to marry again; her second husband was a Yorkshire man Sir Roger Tocotes.   In 1485 her son Richard and her husband Roger were granted licence to add a chantry chapel onto Bromham church.   It was complete by the time Lady Elizabeth died in 1491.   Her husband died in the following year on the 2nd November 1492.   His full length alabaster effigy is in the centre of the chapel.
Sir Richard Beauchamp died in 1508, he was married to Anne but they had no children so the St. Amand title became extinct upon his death.   In his will he directed that he was to be buried at Blackfriars in London.   The manor of Bromham (Roches Manor) then passed to Sir John Bayntun who was descended from Sir Richard’s grandmother’s sister, Joan Roches who had married Nicholas Bayntun.   A brass memorial to Sir John Bayntun who died in 1518, is on the floor near this tomb.     [This text is copied from information on the tomb]
