This is our interpretation of the inscription on this memorial and therefore it might not be accurate.

In the Chancel lieth the Body
of ANTHONY SOUTHBY Esq:
Waiting for it's glorious Re-union
-- Soul endued with heavenly Virtue
His truly Christian Humility & genuine Simplicity
Were attended with the kindred Graces of Faith,
Purity, Meekness, Temperance, Charity,
for all those he was exemplary;
& chiefly for the calm fervour of a constant unaffected piety,
adorned with a peculiar sweetness of temper, visible in his countenance.
He was a Pattern of all Social and Domestic Virtues
& in such relation Religion animated & inspired the goodness of his nature.
In him was seen the possibility of praying always without
neglicting the offices of even the recreations of human life.
His conversations were in those blessed regions unto which
it pleased the Lord to call him from this abode of vanity and sorrow
on the 5th day of April A.D. MDCCLIX AE: LXVIII.
Reader remember 'tis thy duty to imitate those virtues which
(if thou hadst a portion of his humility) though mayest despair to equal,
but despair not, they are the gifts of God,
and the fruits of piety like His.'
