William was born on 7 May 1889 in Swindon, Wiltshire. He was the third child of Mary (nee Uzzell) and Jesse.

Like his father he worked for the GWR but he worked as a clerk and was based in Swindon.

On 5 June 1915 he married Annie Marie Austin, in Swindon, where they later raised their daughter.

William was a keen footballer but his playing career ended at a very early age due him losing an eye. However he moved into administration being secratary to Swindon Victoria for many and serving on the Wiltshire FA. He travelled widely both in this country and in Europe, although when travelling abroad he always went by rail and sea as he would not fly.

He was an active member of the Clifton Street Methodist congregation serving there in many capacities.

William died on 8 April 1959, just a week before Duncan (his grandson) was born.
