Mandy remembers her grandmother as, quite simply, a lovely person. Never harsh, always loving, generous and hard working. Mandy spent
lots of time with her grandparents - Nanny and Grampy Sweets - when she was a child and adored that precious time.
Mandy would arrive on a Friday night and settle down to watch tv for a while before it was bed time. Nanny Sweets would warm Mandy's nighty in front of the fire and
prepare a hot water bottle for the bed - a sort of round concrete contraption that would bake her toes if they got anywhere near it. In the morning there would be a tap on the
door and Grampy would bring in a cup of tea for Mandy to drink; later would come the irresistable smell of bacon. After breakfast Nanny would go about her business -
washing up, tidying, picking up crumbs, all while wearing a wrap around pinney. But Mandy loved to watch her make apple pie; she loved to eat that pie
too! Nobody can make apple pie as nice. Her strawberry jam (made from strawberries grampy grew in the garden) was also superb but looked like lots of hard work
to produce. Other things Mandy remembers about her nan is the lovely wavy white hair, rosy cheeks and when she couldn't remember
the correct word saying 'whatchamacallit'.
Mandy's sister Terri also had very fond memories of her grandparents; Terri and her baby Gregory stayed with them for a short while when Nanny wasn't too well. Gregory was
only about six weeks old when his great-grandmother died; Terri was always pleased Nanny Sweets had at least a short time with him.
