Website Design
We didn't have clue where to start. We looked at other people's sites to help us decide upon features
we liked or didn't like. As so much of this is subjective we decided to look at a few advice pages too,
taking some ideas from each. The one which gave us most food for thought and practical information was
"Cyndi's list", which if you are into family history, you will almost certainly know. Click on tool box
to take you straight to Cyndi's guide for website design.

Surnames in our family secton
There are a number of programs available for converting Gedcoms to HTML to be found on the internet.
We started off by using Rob Jacob's program - our surnames page and all the subesquent family history pages were
generated using the Gedpage program. For details on using this excellent program, written by Rob Jacob,
follow this link : Gedpage home page
However, as time went by we wanted some additional features, so Duncan wrote the program currently being used
which, amongst other things, will display photographs along with details of the person.
Uploading to our Service Provider
We copied the pages to our site using CoffeeCup FTP - this is a free program and quite usable.

However we later splashed out and bought a copy of Cute FTP as this has many more features, including moving
files between folders on the server. Also its logging of progress of bulk copies is far less obtrusive.

Telling the world we are here!
What's the point of putting all our information on the web if nobody knows its there? We found this site which,
after filling in a details page, it added our site to up to 15 search engines free of charge. The only thing they
asked in return was that we included this button at our site, which is a link to their site, which we gladly do now.
The do sell other packages, but we use their free one.
